High-dose baclofen for the treatment of alcohol dependence (BACLAD study): A randomized, placebo-controlled trial

Müller C.A, Geisel O., Pelz P. et al.
European Neuropsychopharmacology: 2015, 25, p. 1167–1177.

Cycle of Change: change promoter or benevolent fiction?

Ashton M., Davies N.
One of our hot topics – essays on important issues which sometimes generate heated debate over the facts or their interpretation. Its simplicity is beguiling, but does the ubiquitous cycle of change model simply describe the change process, or help predict and accelerate it?

Acupuncture: potential value of a ‘theatrical placebo’

Ashton M., Davies N.
One of our selection of hot topics – important issues which sometimes generate heated debate. Asks whether acupuncture helps treat substance use problems and, if it does, whether this is ‘just’ a placebo effect. Is there something valuable here which has not yet been proven to work, or is trying to find proof a dead end?

Can 12-step mutual aid bridge recovery resources deficit?

Ashton M., Davies N.
‘Hot topics’ offer background and analysis on important issues which sometimes generate heated debate. Can mutual aid groups based on AA’s 12 steps help bridge the gap between heightened ambition for recovery from addiction and diminished public resources. That largely depends on whether the worldwide popularity of the steps is matched by evidence of effectiveness.

Computerised therapies: sacrificing effectiveness for wider access?

Ashton M., Davies N.
‘Hot topics’ offer background and analysis on important issues which sometimes generate heated debate. Among culturally accepted vehicles for delivering substance use interventions, computers, mobile phones and tablets are joining face-to-face work. Are we sacrificing effectiveness for convenience and economy?

Constantino M.J., Coyne A.E., Vîsla A. et al.
Psychotherapy: 2018, 55(4), p. 373–485.
A review commissioned by the American Psychological Association found that patients who enter psychotherapy with positive expectations about outcomes tend to actually have better outcomes, suggesting therapists should regularly assess expectations and if indicated take steps to enhance them.

Burton R., Henn C., Lavoie D. et al.
The Lancet: 2017, 389, p. 1558–1580.
An ambitious attempt to use research to understand the most effective and cost-effective set of policies for reducing alcohol-related harm in the English context, from taxation and price regulation to managing the drinking environment.

Wilson I.M., Graham K., Taft A.
BMC Public Health: 2014, 14(881), p. 1–11.

Based on research, financial data and stakeholder surveys and testimonies, the UK government’s official drug policy advisers warn that without significant efforts to protect investment and quality, in England “loss of funding will result in the dismantling of a drug misuse treatment system that has brought huge improvement to the lives of people with drug and alcohol problems”.
